Dear Families,

I am so excited to welcome your child to 3rd grade at RCS! 2025 will be filled with fun, learning, growth, and discovery. Below you’ll find everything you need to know as we get ready to start the year.

📚 Classroom Info

Teacher: Mrs. Tanner

Room: 217 – A warm and welcoming space filled with books, learning tools, and excitement for the year ahead!


Academic & Curriculum Focus

📖 ELA (English Language Arts): In 3rd grade, students will:

  • Build a reading life with fiction books

  • Read to learn with nonfiction books

  • Practice reading skills in book clubs with mystery books

  • Study characters in book clubs with series books

  • Research in book clubs about elephants, penguins, and frogs, Oh My!

  • Write fiction with events in order and details

  • Write nonfiction with facts and details

  • Write opinions with reasons and evidence

  • Write small essays about their reading

  • Write fairy tales with events in order and details

🧮 Math: In 3rd grade, students will:

  • Understanding math as a set of problem-solving strategies

  • Use place value to fluently add and subtract within 1,000

  • Use arrays and equal groups to multiply and divide

  • Use patterns to multiply by 0, 1, 2, 5 and 10

  • Use properties to multiply by 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9

  • Solve problems using multiplication and division 

  • Write fractions and compare them 

  • Measure and graph data

  • Describe and classify 2-dimentional shapes

🌎 Science & Social Studies: Units are in depth studies that offer real world connections and inspire students. During this time students will create, imagine, explore, engineer, and research many topics such as:

  • Geography

  • The United States

  • Brazil, China, Kenya

  • Making a Difference

  • Motion and Magnetism 

  • Weather Around the World

  • How Organisms Survive in Different Environments

  • Life Cycles and Traits

📌Curriculum Resources

Reflex- Students have a login card to access Reflex and practice math facts.

High Frequency Words- Contact me if your student needs another set of words to practice at home.

📖 Homework Expectations

Students will have consistent homework Monday through Friday:

  • Reading: 

    • Read for at least 15 minutes every night and log it in the reading log. 

      • Research demonstrates that children who read for 15 or more minutes nightly achieve the greatest academic gains. 

    • Practice high-frequency words.

  • Math:

  • Practice math fluency daily.

  • Document all completed homework on homework log. 

This routine helps build strong habits and meaningful learning progress—every minute counts!
